The Jewish Advocate--Thursday, November 19, 1970| Your World of Opera | by William D. Miranda B.U. TRIAL'S
The Boston University Savoyards kicked off the Gilbert and Sullivan season last week by presenting for student orientation week a splendid Trial by Jury in the Sherman Union Auditorium. Despite claims from cast and staff that the production had been only thrown together, the presentation was tight musically thanks to musical director James Busby who accompanied on the piano and scintillatingly dramatically thanks to the clever direction of Juliet Cunningham. | The shape of enjoyable things to come was represented by the fine array of performers who will probably star in this upcoming season of Savoy Operas at B.U. Jeffrey Weisenfreund made a fine madcap judge who patters distinctly and delineated a clever individual portrait of the character. Alan Abrams, another company stalwart, lent gravity as the very vocal and opinionated usher. Paul David Seltzer was amusing and forgivable as the defendant and the attractive Linda Houpt displayed a rich voice in the part of the Plaintiff. The brisk performance was a fine way to introduce freshmen to the fascinating phenomenon, the college Gilbert and Sullivan society. Many will stay on to become part of the company. Better still, many will become part of the all-important audience.
